Biography<\/span><\/h2>

Abner was born in 1768. He was the son of\u00a0Aaron Steele<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Violet Alexander<\/a>.<\/p>

Abner Alexander STEELE – b. 5 Nov 1768 – d. 1 Jul 1843, [1842] age 74 yrs. wanting 4 months, 4 days.<\/p>

He married Elizabeth DEALE b. 13 Apr 1777 d. 2 Jul 1854. She was the dau. of Clement & Mary (Griffin) Deale.<\/p>

Abner and Elizabeth married 26 Mar 1794. They were united in life 48 years, 3 months, and 4 days.<\/p>

Both are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Eutaw, Greene County, AL. They were the parents of 13 children all but the youngest child were born in Pendleton Dist. In the War of 1812, he fought as a Lieutenant in Nash’s South Carolina Volunteers. He lived in South Carolina through 1820. He is on record as selling his property in South Carolina: “Abner Steele offers his lands and property for sale being about to remove. One tract is on Chauga Creek, another on Conneross where he resides.\u201d<\/p>

Elihue Rees Steele, second son and third child of this couple, is said to have been the first of the family to come to AL. He then went back to SC and assisted in the move of the entire family to Greene County. In 1818, Elihue first crop at Mesopotamia, AL.\u00a0<\/p>

In 1817, Abner had a plat surveyed for him on Village Creek, in the Pendleton district of South Carolina.<\/p>

In 1820, Abner’s sister\u00a0Jane Steele<\/a>\u00a0appointed Abner as her executor in her will. She left a bequest to Abner’s daughter, Jane.<\/p>

Before 1822, Abner had relocated to Greene county, Alabama, and was appointed as Justice of the Peace on May 16, 1822.<\/p>

Abner A Steele passed away in 1842, Greene Co. Alabama.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>

Slave Ownership<\/span><\/h2>

There are three overlapping lists of twenty-one enslaved people in Abner Steel’s probate papers: List 1 (a partial list) is on image 91, the first page of the probate record images; List 2: enslaved people who were sold in Sept 184? — probably 1843, is on image 99, page 9; List 3\u00a0: enslaved people who were “left in his will for distribution” to Abner’s heirs, is on image 107\/page 17.<\/p>

Genealogy<\/span><\/h2>

From “The Georgia Frontier, Vol 2”<\/p>

Aaron Steele, born ca 1742 in new Castle County, Delaware, as also a son of James Steele and his wife, Mary (Alexander) Steele, and a brother to Isaac Steele, Sr. Aaron was a resident of Abbeville County, South Carolina, where he died in 1795, and inventory of his estate being drawn up on 14 December by William Pickens, Sr., James Carlisle and Robert Davis. In 1801, a legacy was paid to Jean Steele and Aaron Steele, Jr. \u201clegacy left him by his grandfather\u201d, signed William and James Steele. The LWT of Aaron Steele was dated 5 August 17794 in Abbeville District and probated on 9 November 1795, naming executors John Caldwell, and his wife, Elizabeth Steele. Known issue:<\/p>
