Gideon Patterson was born during colonial times in St. Peter’s Parish, New Kent, Virginia. He moved from Virginia to Caswell, North Carolina a little before 1777. He married Ann Benton and had a son Gideon Jr.\u00a0 Gideon had a small plantation, he planted and sold Corn and Tobacco. It was enough to get by for him and his three companions that worked for him. He was a compassionate towards these three slaves. They held a special place in his heart. He gave two of his slaves their freedom. He wanted them to live on his farm for as long as possible.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the name of God I Gideon Patterson of Caswell County being in a very low state of health but in my right mind and reason do make this my last will and Testament it is my Desire that my negroes should be continued on the plantation where they now are until all my Just Debts are paid, and then it is my will that Agge & Merrier should not be held in Bondage to any person, that my Executor hereafter named shall for their faithful service procure their Liberty.
