Peter Jarrett Goza (c1774-c1839) married about 1801 Elizabeth “Betsey” Matthews (or Mathis) (1777-1865) daughter of Benjamin Matthews (1748-1818), Peter was the son of Aaron Goza, descended from an Italian nobleman named Gossi, who moved to the Netherlands, where the name changed to Goza or Gossey. His descendant moved to America. Peter was in Georgia Land Lotteries from 1797-1810, then moved back to Fairfield Co, South Carolina. In 1818, he moved to Claiborne Co, Mississippi, then to Cape Girardeau Co, Missouri Territory, returning through Tennessee to Chester County, South Carolina, before 1820. Elizabeth moved to Arkansas about 1845. In the Census of 1860, she was 83, living with her son Mark, and her occupation was listed as “knitter.” Her descendants always listed her maiden name as “Mathis.” She died in Hot Springs County, Arkansas, 16 Dec 1865
