Gideon Patterson was born during colonial times in St. Peter’s Parish, New Kent, Virginia. He moved from Virginia to Caswell, North Carolina a little before 1777. He married Ann Benton and had a son Gideon Jr.  Gideon had a small plantation, he planted and sold Corn and Tobacco. It was enough to get by for him and his three companions that worked for him. He was a compassionate towards these three slaves. They held a special place in his heart. He gave two of his slaves their freedom. He wanted them to live on his farm for as long as possible.
