Francis Young & Marie Martha LeGros

Marie was the wife of Francois Cadet. As a young French Huguenot couple they left the Deux Sevres region of France in the late 1600s and settled into the French Huguenot Community in London. Marie Martha was buried in St. Luke’s Church graveyard on Old Street in London.

Marthe’s parents were Michel LeGros and Magdelaine Bourdeaux, of Chastelerault (Châtellerault), Poitou, France, who were on Huguenot relief rolls in London in 1705. Modern day Châtellerault is twenty-two miles N.E. of Poitiers. Châtellerault, a Protestant stronghold, was the site of negotiations over the Edict of Nantes (1598), which gave Protestants freedom of worship in France following the intermittent Wars of Religion between Protestant and Catholic forces in France.

The following 1692 marriage record for Noel LeGros, lists Michel LeGros and Magdelaine Bourdeaux as Noel LeGros’ parents. In the same record, François Cadet is listed as Noel’s brother-in-law. Thus it appears that Michel LeGros was Marie Marthe’s father and Magdelaine Bourdeaux was probably her mother — assuming no second marriage for Michel LeGros.
